Have you heard the argument that Islam is a peaceful religion because most Muslims live peacefully and that only a "tiny minority of extremists" practice violence? The following polls convey what Muslims say are their attitudes toward terrorism, violence in defense of Islam, Sharia, honor killings and matters concerning assimilation in Western society. The results are all the more astonishing because most of the polls were conducted by organizations with an obvious interest in "discovering" agreeable statistics that downplay any cause for concern.

1. Terrorism

The Pew Research Center published a study in 2013 on the muslim society’s opinion about civilian attacks. At least 1 in 4 Muslims does not reject violence against civilians. The survey involved a total of more than 38,000 face-to-face interviews in 80-plus languages. It covered Muslims in 39 countries, which are divided into six regions in this report – Southern and Eastern Europe (Russia and the Balkans), Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa.

Another intresting topic is the opinion of Muslim majority countries about terrorist groups and their goals. A recent survey found, that extremist groups Hamas and Hezbollah continue to receive mixed ratings from Muslim publics. In Jordania, 55% of Muslims have a favorable view of Hezbollah and 60% feel the same about Hamas. They also show more divided countries: for example 30% of Egyiptians support Hezbollah, and 49 % think positivly about Hamas.

2. Sharia

The Sharia includes strict religous regulations and most of them go against human rights. Based on Sharia, stoning is usual penalty for adultery or for leaving Islam. According to a survey in 2013 a vast majority of Muslims favor Sharia. Among those who do, stoning women for adultery is favored by 89% in Pakistanis, 85% in Afghanistan, 81% in Egypt, 67% in Jordan, almost 50% in 'moderate' Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, 58% in Iraq, 44% in Tunisia, 29% in Turkey, and 26% in Russia.

Executing the woman in an honor killing for sex outside of marriage is favored over executing the man in almost every Islamic country. Over half of the Muslims surveyed believe that honor killings for sex were at least partially justified.

Nowadays it is a burning question if Islam belivers are able to assimilate and accept our values in western civilizations.
